--- title: "Monitor a scale group" description: "Follow an E2E scale group's status, its running and removed nodes, each node's graphs, the audit logs, and the monthly activity timeline." content_type: "how-to" product: "auto-scaling" platform: "MyAccount" url: "/myaccount/auto-scaling/how-to/monitor-a-scale-group/" topic: ["operate"] relationships: {"requires":["/myaccount/auto-scaling/how-to/create-a-scale-group/"]} --- # Monitor a scale group A scale group's list row and tabs tell you what it is doing. The list shows its status and node count. **Active Node Details** and **Terminated Node Details** show its nodes, and **Monitoring** shows each node's graphs. **Audit Logs** shows each scaling step, and **Activity Timeline** shows who changed what. ## Before you begin - You have a scale group. - For the node tabs, the scale group reads **Running**, **Scaling**, or **Cooldown**. - For **Monitoring**, it reads **Running** or **Scaling**. **Audit Logs** and **Activity Timeline** are available in every state. ## Read the scale group's status In MyAccount, under **Compute**, click **Auto Scaling**. **Manage Auto Scaling** lists each scale group with its **Status** and its **Active Node Count**, the number of nodes it runs. The **Status** shows the state when the page loaded. While a scale group reads **Creating**, **Deploying Nets**, **Scaling**, **Starting**, or **Stopping**, the list refreshes itself every five seconds. At other times, click refresh to see the latest state. | Status | What it means | What you can do from **Manage** | | ---------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------- | | **Creating** | The scale group is being created | None yet; wait for the next state | | **Deploying Nets** | A short, normal step at creation | None yet; wait for the next state | | **Running** | The scale group runs its nodes, and you can edit its settings | **Resize Service**, **Stop**, and **Delete** | | **Scaling** | The scale group is adding or removing nodes | None yet; wait for the next state | | **Cooldown** | The normal wait after each scaling action, for the scale group's **Cooldown(s)** seconds | None yet; wait for the next state | | **Stopping** or **Starting** | The scale group is stopping or starting after **Stop** or **Start** | None yet; wait for the next state | | **Stopped** | The scale group has no nodes and keeps its settings | **Start** and **Delete** | | **Warning** | A node has a problem, such as being powered off from outside the scale group | None; it clears once the node runs again | | **Failed Scaling** | A scaling action failed | None; wait, or contact support | | **Failed** | Creating the scale group failed | **Resize Service** and **Delete** | | **Failed Deleting** | Deleting the scale group failed | **Resize Service** and **Delete** | For a scale group that stays in one state, see [The scale group shows Failed Scaling](/myaccount/auto-scaling/troubleshooting/auto-scaling/#the-scale-group-shows-failed-scaling), [The scale group shows Warning](/myaccount/auto-scaling/troubleshooting/auto-scaling/#the-scale-group-shows-warning), and [The scale group stays on Creating](/myaccount/auto-scaling/troubleshooting/auto-scaling/#the-scale-group-stays-on-creating). If **Delete** is refused, see [Sorry, an unexpected error occurred while retrieving your Scale group information](/myaccount/auto-scaling/troubleshooting/auto-scaling/#sorry-an-unexpected-error-occurred-while-retrieving-your-scale-group-information). To find a scale group among many, tag your scale groups and filter the list by tag. **Search scaling group** searches only the rows on the current page. ## See the nodes Click the scale group in the list to open its tabs. While the scale group reads **Running**, **Scaling**, or **Cooldown**: - **Active Node Details** lists each node in the scale group with its **Scale Node Name**, **Public IP** (**N/A** when it has none), **Private IP**, and **Status**. If the scale group has no nodes, it says **Currently no Scale Group Nodes are available.** - **Terminated Node Details** lists the nodes the scale group has removed, with **Scale Node Name**, **Created At**, **Terminated At**, **Public IP**, and **Usage**, which shows how long each node ran in days, hours, and minutes. While the scale group reads **Running**, **Resize Service** is also on **Active Node Details**; see [Resize the scale group](/myaccount/auto-scaling/how-to/resize-stop-or-start-a-scale-group/#resize-the-scale-group). To sign in to a node, see [Sign in to scale group nodes](/myaccount/auto-scaling/how-to/sign-in-to-a-node/). ## Watch a node's graphs 1. While the scale group reads **Running** or **Scaling**, open its **Monitoring** tab. It lists the nodes with their **Name**, **Public IP**, **Private IP**, and **Status**. 2. Pick a node. 3. Choose a period: **Last Hour**, **Last 6 Hours**, **Last 12 Hours**, **Last 24 Hours**, or **Last 1 Week**. The tab shows the node's graphs of **RAM**, **Storage**, **CPU Load**, **CPU Utilization**, **Disk Read Operation**, **Disk Write Operation**, and **Network Traffic** over that period. The graphs plot one point every three minutes, with times in India Standard Time (IST). The **CPU Utilization** graph comes from a monitoring agent inside the node. The elastic policy checks a separate reading taken from outside it, so the two can show different figures at the same moment. ## Read the audit logs Open the **Audit Logs** tab. It shows the scale group's scaling log. Each entry has a **Log Created at** time, in India Standard Time (IST), and a **State**, the message recorded at that step. Scaling by the elastic or scheduled policy appears here, for example **Role web scaling up from 2 to 3 nodes** followed by **New state: SCALING**, and **Role web scaling down from 3 to 2 nodes**. ## Review the activity timeline Open the **Activity Timeline** tab, and in **Select Month**, choose a month. The tab lists each action taken through the portal or the API that month, with its time, its details, who did it and from which IP, and whether it ended in **Success** or **Failure**. You will see these actions: - **LAUNCH**, **UPDATE_POLICY**, **RESIZE**, **STOP**, **START**, and **TERMINATE** for the scale group itself. - **ATTACH_SG** and **DETACH_SG** for security groups. - **ATTACH_VPC**, **DETACH_VPC**, **ATTACH_PUBLIC_IP**, and **DETACH_PUBLIC_IP** for the network. The timeline's times are in UTC, five and a half hours behind the IST times on **Audit Logs**. Scaling done by a policy is recorded on **Audit Logs** instead. You can now follow the scale group's status, its nodes, and each scaling step. To read the same information from a script, see the [as-list](/api/myaccount/operations/as-list/), [as-active-nodes](/api/myaccount/operations/as-active-nodes/), and [as-attached-lb](/api/myaccount/operations/as-attached-lb/) operations in the API reference. If the scale group scales differently from what you expect, see [Troubleshooting Auto Scaling](/myaccount/auto-scaling/troubleshooting/auto-scaling/#the-scale-group-does-not-add-or-remove-nodes).
