Its state on the DBaaS list tells you when you can connect and when billing runs. ## What each state means | State | When you see it | | ------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | **Creating** | MyAccount is creating the server, right after you click **Launch DBaaS**. | | **Deploying** | The server is up and DBaaS is setting up the database. Billing starts here. | | **Running** | Ready: connect and work. | | **Restarting** | Briefly, after you restart it. | | **Resuming** | After you start a stopped DBaaS instance, until it is **Running** again. | | **Stopping** | Shutting down, right after you stop it. | | **Stopped** | After a stop finishes, and when a disk expansion finishes. Billing continues until you delete the DBaaS instance. | | **Upgrading** | A plan change or a disk expansion is in progress. | | **Terminating** | Being deleted, right after you delete it. | | **Terminated** | Fully deleted. | | **Creation Failed** | Creation went wrong during **Creating**. | | **Deploy Failed** | Setup went wrong during **Deploying**. | | **VM Error** | An error stopped the DBaaS instance partway. | If a DBaaS instance shows **Creation Failed**, **Deploy Failed**, or **VM Error**, contact support; [Troubleshooting DBaaS](/myaccount/database/troubleshooting/database/) lists what to have ready. ## Read Replicas A Read Replica moves through the same states as any other DBaaS instance. Once it reads **Running**, it is ready to promote; see [Promote a Read Replica to Master Node](/myaccount/database/how-to/promote-a-read-replica-to-master/).
