In MyAccount itself, you label a node with tags instead. ## Rename a node through the API Send the [node-action operation](/api/myaccount/operations/node-action/) with the action type `rename` and the new name. The node shows the new name straight away. ## Label a node with tags Tags let you label a node so you can pick it out in your node list. Use them for an environment, a service the node runs, or anything else you find useful. Open **Compute > Nodes** to see your node list. Edit a node's tags directly in its row; it is the only place in the portal to change them. Pick the name with care when you create the node; after that, only the API can change it. The name field starts filled in with the plan name (spaces, dots, and commas become hyphens) plus a random 3-digit number. Change it there, before you launch. See [Create a node](/myaccount/node/how-to/create-a-node/).
