The resource keeps its own public IP, and you can take the add-on away again without touching the original. ## Before you begin - A reserved IP with the status **Available**. See [Reserve an IP](/myaccount/reserved-ip/how-to/reserve-an-ip/) if you do not have one yet. - A node or a firewall to attach it to. A node must be unlocked. ## Attach the IP 1. Open **Network > Reserve IP**. 2. Open the address's **Actions** menu and choose **Attach IP**. 3. Select **Node** or **Firewall**, pick the resource, and click **Attach IP**. The status changes to **Attached**, and the resource's name appears under **Assigned To**. On a node, the address is listed on the **Network** tab with the node's add-on IPv4 addresses. The node answers on it straight away, with nothing to set up inside the node: `ip addr` on a Linux node shows it next to the node's own public IP. A resource can hold several Add-on IPs; repeat the steps with another reserved IP to add one. ## Detach the IP 1. Open **Network > Reserve IP**. 2. Open the address's **Actions** menu and choose **Detach IP**. 3. In **Detach Reserve IP**, click **Detach IP**. The address leaves the node, and its status goes back to **Available**. It stays reserved to your account, ready to attach somewhere else. If **Attach IP** stays greyed out after you pick a node, the node and the address are on different networks; [The IP will not attach](/myaccount/reserved-ip/troubleshooting/reserved-ip/#the-ip-will-not-attach-to-a-node) has the way round it. To use the address as the node's main public IP instead, see [Attach a reserved IP to a node](/myaccount/node/how-to/attach-a-reserved-ip/).
