--- title: "Create a Personal Access Token" description: "Create a Personal Access Token in a TIR project to sign in scripts, API calls, and CI/CD pipelines with a token instead of your account password." content_type: "how-to" product: "personal-access-tokens" platform: "TIR" url: "/tir/personal-access-tokens/how-to/create-a-personal-access-token/" topic: ["tokens"] --- # Create a Personal Access Token Create a Personal Access Token to let a script, a command-line tool, or a CI/CD pipeline sign in to TIR with a token in place of your password. A token belongs to the project you create it in. ## Before you begin You need a role with Create permission on **Personal Access Tokens** in the project. Ask the project owner for access. ## Create the token 1. In TIR, open your project. In the side menu, under **PLATFORM SERVICES**, select **Personal Access Tokens**. 2. Select **Create Token**. 3. In **Token name**, keep the suggested name, `tir-token-` followed by a number, or type a name that says what the token is for, such as `ci-pipeline`, `dev-laptop`, or `jupyter-integration`. One token per tool or machine lets you delete one later while the others keep working. A name can be up to 255 characters and must differ from the name of every other token, including deleted ones. 4. Select **Create**. Copy the new token and store it where your script can read it, such as an environment variable, a secret manager, or a password manager. Select **CLOSE** when you are done; the token is in the list. You can copy the token from the list again later; see [Copy a token or download its config file](/tir/personal-access-tokens/how-to/copy-a-token-or-download-its-config-file/). The token works for 365 days, and its **Expiry** column shows the date. To use it, see [Use a token in API calls](/tir/personal-access-tokens/how-to/use-a-token-in-api-calls/). For help with a message you see while creating a token, see [Troubleshooting Personal Access Tokens](/tir/personal-access-tokens/troubleshooting/personal-access-tokens/).
