--- title: "Get started with TIR Object Storage" description: "Create a TIR Object Storage bucket, upload a first file from the portal, and see where the bucket mounts on an instance." content_type: "get-started" product: "tir-object-storage" platform: "TIR" url: "/tir/tir-object-storage/get-started/" --- # Get started with TIR Object Storage Create an Object Storage bucket, upload your first file to it, and mount it on an instance. ## Before you begin You need a TIR project in Delhi or Chennai and permission to create and update datasets in it. A Member gets that permission through a policy that allows it. ## Create the bucket 1. In TIR, open your project. In the side menu, under **Storage**, select **Object Storage (EOS Dataset)**. 2. Select **Create Bucket**. 3. Keep the suggested **Bucket Name**, which starts with `tir-bkt-`, or type your own. A name has 3 to 63 characters: lowercase letters, numbers, and hyphens, starting and ending with a letter or number. **Alias (Dataset Name)** follows the name as you type. 4. Leave **Enable Encryption**, **Enable Object Versioning**, and **Enable Object Lock** off for now. You can turn object lock on only here, while you create the bucket, so read [Create a bucket](/tir/tir-object-storage/how-to/create-a-bucket/) first if you need it. 5. Select **Create**. TIR creates the bucket and gives you its keys and setup commands under **Next Steps**. Close that to return to the list, where the new bucket goes from **Pending** to **Ready**. ## Upload a file 1. In the list, select the row of your bucket. 2. Open the **Data Objects** tab and select **Upload Data**. 3. Leave **Destination Bucket / Folder Path** as `/` to put the files at the top of the bucket, or type a folder path. 4. Select up to five files, or drag them in, then select **Upload**. When every file has finished, select **Ok**. The files are on the **Data Objects** tab; if one has yet to show, refresh the list. ## Use the bucket from an instance Mount the bucket when you create an instance, or later from the instance's **Associated Datasets** tab. On an instance it appears at `/datasets/`, where `` is the bucket's **Alias (Dataset Name)**, and it is read-only. See [Mount a bucket on an instance or Slurm Cluster](/tir/tir-object-storage/how-to/mount-a-bucket-on-a-workload/). ## What to do next - [Connect to a bucket with the MinIO CLI or s3cmd](/tir/tir-object-storage/how-to/connect-to-a-bucket-with-an-s3-tool/) to upload large files, and any file over 5 GB. - [Use object versioning](/tir/tir-object-storage/how-to/use-object-versioning/) and [add a lifecycle rule](/tir/tir-object-storage/how-to/add-a-lifecycle-rule/) to keep earlier versions and keep their number in check. - [Share an object with a presigned URL](/tir/tir-object-storage/how-to/share-an-object-with-a-presigned-url/) to give someone outside the project one file.
