--- title: "Browse, download, and delete objects" description: "Open folders in a TIR Object Storage bucket, download an object, and delete objects from the Data Objects tab or with an S3 tool." content_type: "how-to" product: "tir-object-storage" platform: "TIR" url: "/tir/tir-object-storage/how-to/browse-download-and-delete-objects/" topic: ["work-with-data"] --- # Browse, download, and delete objects Look through the objects in a bucket, download one, or delete the ones you are done with. ## Before you begin - A bucket with data in it; see [Upload data to a bucket](/tir/tir-object-storage/how-to/upload-data-to-a-bucket/). - Permission to read datasets in the project. A Member gets it through a policy that allows reading datasets. Read permission lets you open folders. To delete an object, you also need permission to delete datasets. ## Browse and download 1. In the list, select the row of the bucket, then open the **Data Objects** tab. 2. You see one folder at a time. Select a folder to open it, and select **Current Directory:** to go back up. 3. To download a file, select it or use the download action on its row. Downloads are for files; selecting a folder opens it. Refresh the list to show an object you uploaded a moment ago. ## Delete an object With versioning on, deleting an object leaves it as a previous version. Deleting one version removes only that version, for good. See [Use object versioning](/tir/tir-object-storage/how-to/use-object-versioning/). 1. Use the delete action on the object's row. **Delete Dataset Object** asks "Are you sure you want to delete data: ``?". 2. Confirm. The portal shows "`` deleted successfully". To delete with an S3 tool, use `mc rm` or `s3cmd del`. To clear the whole bucket at once, use [Empty a bucket](/tir/tir-object-storage/how-to/empty-a-bucket/). A version under retention or a legal hold is protected from deletion. If you try to delete it, TIR gives the reason EOS reports. See [Lock one object version or place a legal hold](/tir/tir-object-storage/how-to/lock-an-object-version/) and [Troubleshooting TIR Object Storage](/tir/tir-object-storage/troubleshooting/tir-object-storage/).
