--- title: "Delete an SFS" description: "Delete a TIR Shared File System and its data for good, once it is unmounted from every instance and training job." content_type: "how-to" product: "tir-sfs" platform: "TIR" url: "/tir/tir-sfs/how-to/delete-an-sfs/" topic: ["lifecycle"] --- # Delete an SFS Deleting an SFS removes its storage and every file on it for good, and stops billing for it. ## Before you begin - The **Dataset** permission in your project policy. SFS shares this permission with Object Storage, Block Storage, and Parallel File System. - Copies of any files you need, kept somewhere else, such as TIR Datasets or storage outside TIR. Deleting an SFS is permanent. - The SFS unmounted from every instance and out of use by every active training job. If it is still in use, the delete is refused with a list of the instances or jobs using it. See [Mount an SFS on an instance](/tir/tir-sfs/how-to/mount-an-sfs-on-an-instance/). ## Delete the SFS 1. In **Manage Shared File-System**, open the SFS's **Actions** menu and select **Delete File-System**. 2. Tick "I understand and want to delete file-system ``.", where `` is the SFS's name. 3. Select **Delete**. The SFS leaves your list. Deleting an instance or a training job works differently: any SFS it had mounted stays in the list, ready to mount elsewhere, until you delete it yourself. For help with a delete message, see [Troubleshooting TIR Shared File System](/tir/tir-sfs/troubleshooting/tir-sfs/).
