--- title: "TIR Snapshots" description: "Take, schedule, restore, and delete snapshots of a TIR Virtual Machine's disk, or start a new VM from one." content_type: "overview" product: "tir-snapshots" platform: "TIR" url: "/tir/tir-snapshots/" --- # TIR Snapshots A snapshot is a fast copy of a TIR Virtual Machine's disk, taken at one moment. Take one before a risky change, or on a schedule, and you can put the VM's disk back to that moment, or launch a new VM that starts with it. ## Where to find it In TIR, open your project. In the side menu, under **Storage**, select **Snapshots** to see every snapshot in the project. To see the snapshots of one VM, open that VM and select its **Snapshots** tab. ## What you can do ### Take snapshots - [Create a VM snapshot](/tir/tir-snapshots/how-to/create-a-vm-snapshot/) of a running or stopped VM, and rename it later. - [Schedule VM snapshots](/tir/tir-snapshots/how-to/schedule-vm-snapshots/) every six hours, daily, weekly, or on a timetable of your own. ### Use a snapshot - [Restore a VM from a snapshot](/tir/tir-snapshots/how-to/restore-a-vm-from-a-snapshot/) to put its disk back as it was. - [Create a VM from a snapshot](/tir/tir-snapshots/how-to/create-a-vm-from-a-snapshot/) to launch a separate VM with the snapshot's disk. ### Look after your snapshots - [Manage snapshots in a project](/tir/tir-snapshots/how-to/manage-snapshots-in-a-project/): search, sort, and act on every snapshot from **Storage** > **Snapshots**. - [Delete a VM snapshot](/tir/tir-snapshots/how-to/delete-a-vm-snapshot/) once you are done with it. To understand what a snapshot holds and what a restore replaces, read [How snapshots work](/tir/tir-snapshots/concepts/how-snapshots-work/). ## Where to start Start with [Get started with TIR Snapshots](/tir/tir-snapshots/get-started/), which takes a snapshot of a VM and starts a second VM from it. The [TIR Snapshots FAQ](/tir/tir-snapshots/faq/) answers common questions, and [Troubleshooting TIR Snapshots](/tir/tir-snapshots/troubleshooting/tir-snapshots/) helps with each message and each greyed-out action.
