--- title: "Change the plan of a VM" description: "Move a stopped TIR Virtual Machine to another plan, or change what a committed VM does when its term ends." content_type: "how-to" product: "tir-vm" platform: "TIR" url: "/tir/tir-vm/how-to/change-the-plan-of-a-vm/" topic: ["power-and-lifecycle"] --- # Change the plan of a VM Move an hourly TIR Virtual Machine to a plan with more or fewer GPUs, vCPUs, or memory when its work outgrows the plan, or when it needs less. You stop the VM, pick the new plan, and the VM starts again on it with its disk as it was. On a committed VM, the same screen sets what happens when the term ends. ## Before you begin - An hourly VM that is **Stopped**. See [Stop, start, and restart a VM](/tir/tir-vm/how-to/stop-start-and-restart-a-vm/#stop-a-vm). - Permission to update VMs in the project. See [TIR Access Control](/tir/tir-iam/). - On a prepaid account, credit for the new plan in your balance. ## Choose the new plan 1. Open the VM's **Actions** menu in **Manage VMs**, or **More Actions** on its details page, and choose **Update Plan**. 2. Check the current plan under **Overview of the VM** at the top. 3. Choose the new plan. On **GPU** or **CPU**, choose a plan, then a **Configuration**, then how to pay under **VM Pricing**: **On-Demand** bills by the minute at its hourly price, and a committed term is paid upfront. On **Private Cluster**, choose one of your own private clusters, then a configuration. See [Billing options for TIR Virtual Machines](/tir/tir-vm/concepts/billing-options/) to compare the ways to pay. 4. Select **Update**. 5. If you chose a committed term, confirm it in **Committed Plan Confirmation**. Tick the box that accepts the full amount charged upfront and no refund for the remaining days. Then choose what happens when the term ends. The first choice is the default: - **Auto renewal of this committed plan** buys the same plan again if your credits cover it, and otherwise switches to hourly billing and emails the owner. - **Auto start hourly billing for this machine** keeps the VM running and bills it by the minute at the hourly rate. - **Auto deletion of this committed machine** deletes the VM and its disk, so copy out anything you need first. Select **Proceed**. See [Billing options for TIR Virtual Machines](/tir/tir-vm/concepts/billing-options/) for more. For the messages an update can show and what to do, see [Please stop your VM before updating it](/tir/tir-vm/troubleshooting/tir-vm/#please-stop-your-vm-before-updating-it). ## What happens after the update The VM starts again by itself on the new plan, going from **Waiting** to **Running**. The disk and its files, the SSH keys, the datasets, and the shared file systems stay as they were. Billing on the new plan starts when the VM is ready. On **On-Demand**, that is the new plan's hourly price. On a committed term, the term starts and its full price is taken at that moment. The new plan is under **Overview** > **Plan Details** on the VM's details page. ## Change what a committed VM does when its term ends 1. On the list, open **Actions** on the VM's row and choose **Update Committed Plan**. On the details page, choose **Update Plan** in **More Actions**. A committed VM keeps its configuration until the term ends, so only this choice can change. 2. Under **Update Preference**, in **Select Committed Policy**, choose what happens when the term ends: renew the term if your credits cover it, move to hourly billing at the price shown, or delete the VM and its disk. 3. Select **Update**. The choice you saved is the VM's **Renewal Preference** under **Plan Details**. For what each choice does, see [Billing options for TIR Virtual Machines](/tir/tir-vm/concepts/billing-options/). To move an hourly VM to a committed term and keep its plan, see [Convert a VM to a committed plan](/tir/tir-vm/how-to/convert-a-vm-to-committed/).
