A TIR Auto Scaling Group runs a set of identical VMs and changes how many of them run, so the number of servers follows your demand. Every VM starts from one snapshot of a VM of yours, with the same operating system, packages, and configuration. You set a Minimum VMs and a Maximum VMs, and the group adds or removes VMs between them as demand changes.
Use it when one VM has to be big enough for your busiest hour and you pay for that hour all day. A group adds VMs when CPU, memory, or network usage goes over your target, or at times you set, and removes them when demand falls. It also replaces a VM that fails its health checks, so the group keeps its size.
A group runs on CPU plans that are billed by the hour. Each VM has its own disk and its own public IP address. For a single machine that you manage by hand, see TIR Virtual Machine.
Where to find it
Section titled “Where to find it”In TIR, open your project. In the side menu, under Compute, select Auto Scaling Groups. Your groups are listed in Manage Auto Scaling Groups, and Create Auto Scaling Group starts a new one. Auto Scaling Groups are available in Delhi and Chennai.
What you can do
Section titled “What you can do”Start with Get started with TIR Auto Scaling Groups, which builds a small group from a snapshot, watches it add a VM, and deletes it. To see how a group decides, read How auto scaling works.
Create
Section titled “Create”- Create an Auto Scaling Group from a snapshot, with every field of the form explained.
- Scale on usage: add and remove VMs to keep CPU, memory, or network usage near a target.
- Scale on a schedule: change the number of VMs at times you set.
- Use Scale Now to run a different number of VMs right away.
- Edit an Auto Scaling Group to change its range, policy, or schedules.
Operate
Section titled “Operate”- Set up health checks so the group replaces a VM whose application stops answering.
- Stop and start an Auto Scaling Group.
- Retry a failed launch.
- Delete an Auto Scaling Group.
- Monitor an Auto Scaling Group: its state, capacity, health, and the charts of each VM.
- View scaling activity and logs.
Connect
Section titled “Connect”- Manage SSH keys and security groups for every VM in the group.
- Connect a load balancer so traffic reaches the group through one address. The load balancer itself is covered in TIR Load Balancer.
You can also create and manage groups through the compute operations in the TIR API.
