Replicate a bucket to another region

View as Markdown

Replication copies new objects written to a bucket into a bucket in another region, Delhi or Chennai. This gives you a copy of incoming data in a second region.

  • A source bucket and a destination bucket, both in the same project, in different regions. Create the destination in the other region first; see Create a bucket.
  • Object versioning on for both buckets; see Use object versioning.
  • Matching encryption: replication works only between two encrypted buckets or between two unencrypted buckets.
  • A destination that is free of other replication rules. A bucket can be the source of one rule only. Replication runs one way, from the source to its one destination, and stops there.
  • Permission to create datasets in the project. A Member gets it through a policy that allows creating datasets. Setting up a rule needs create and update permission, enabling or disabling it needs update permission, and removing it needs delete and update permission.
  1. In the list, select the bucket’s row and open the Replication tab. It lists the conditions for a rule, the same ones as in Before you begin.
  2. Select Configure Replication Rule, or open the bucket’s Actions menu and select Replication Rule.
  3. Choose Destination Region. It offers the regions your account can use, other than the bucket’s own. If the list is empty, the dialog says “No region is available as a replication destination for this bucket.”
  4. Choose Destination Bucket. The list offers only eligible buckets; when it is empty, the dialog says “No eligible bucket in <region>. A destination has to be in this project, have versioning enabled, match this bucket’s encryption settings, and not already be part of another replication rule.”
  5. Select Save. The portal shows “Replication rule created successfully”.

Replication copies only objects written after the rule exists; objects already in the bucket stay in the source only.

The Replication tab lists the rule with Source and Destination, each with its region, Status (Active or Disabled), Created On, and Actions. Configure Replication Rule is available only before a rule exists.

  • Disable stops copying new objects and keeps the objects already replicated. Enable starts copying new objects again.
  • Delete removes the rule and keeps the objects already copied.

To suspend a bucket’s versioning or delete the bucket, delete its rule first.

The rule shows Active on the Replication tab. Upload an object to the source bucket, then look for it in the Data Objects tab of the destination bucket.

New objects now reach the other region. For help with a message, see Troubleshooting TIR Object Storage.
