Disable or delete a distribution

View as Markdown

Disable a distribution to stop it serving files while you keep its settings and its Distribution URL; enable it again to serve files once more. Delete it when you no longer need it. Billing continues while a distribution is disabled: you pay for the CDN until the distribution is deleted.

Check that your site no longer links to the Distribution URL, or that you are ready for those links to stop working. A disabled distribution does not serve requests, and a deleted one cannot be restored.

All three actions are in the distribution’s Actions menu on Manage CDN Services. In MyAccount, under Network, click CDN to open it.

  1. On Manage CDN Services, in the distribution’s row, open Actions and choose Disable Distribution.
  2. In the Disable Distribution dialog, click Disable.

State changes to InProgress while the change deploys, which takes up to 30 minutes, and Deployed can show up to 15 minutes after the change is live. When State reads Deployed, Status reads Disabled and the distribution no longer serves requests.

  1. In the distribution’s row, open Actions and choose Enable Distribution. It is available once State reads Deployed.
  2. In the Enable Distribution dialog, click Enable.

State changes to InProgress while the change deploys, which takes up to 30 minutes, and Deployed can show up to 15 minutes after the change is live. The distribution then shows Deployed and Enabled, serving files again at the same Distribution URL.

While a distribution is InProgress, another enable or disable is refused with Domain state change operation is in progress. Please try later. Wait for Deployed, and try again.

To delete a distribution, first disable it and wait for Deployed. Delete in the Actions menu appears once the distribution shows Disabled and Deployed.

A deleted distribution cannot be restored. To serve the same origin again, you create a new distribution, which gets a new Distribution URL.

For a bucket’s distribution, the bucket’s public access must have Download and Listing checked when you delete it. If you cleared Listing to close the bucket’s file list, check it again first: open the bucket’s Permissions tab, click Public Access Config, check Listing, and click Save Permission. Otherwise the bucket stays attached to the deleted distribution, and Add to CDN is not available for it again.

  1. In the distribution’s row, open Actions and choose Delete.
  2. For a bucket’s distribution, MyAccount first warns “This CDN distribution is serving content from the bucket <name>.” with your bucket’s name.
  3. In Delete Distribution, which asks “Are you sure you want to delete?”, click Delete.

The distribution leaves Manage CDN Services, with Your Distribution has been deleted successfully. For a bucket’s distribution, Bucket is detached from CDN successfully follows, and Add to CDN is available for the bucket again.

If you see “Bucket does not have public access, prompt user to set permissions to public” after the delete, the bucket stays attached; see Add to CDN is not available after I deleted the distribution.

If Delete is not available or a change is refused, see Troubleshooting CDN.
