Get started with CDP Backup

View as Markdown

Back up a node every few hours and browse its first recovery point. All you need is a running node; to make one, see Create a node.

CDP Backup is billed every month: a licence for each node it backs up, and backup storage at the month’s peak size in GB. For the rates, see E2E’s pricing page.

E2E’s backup server connects to the backup agent on the node on TCP port 1167. You can turn backup on once a security group on the node allows this port. If the node’s own firewall blocks it, backups fail.

  1. In Compute > Nodes, click the node and open its Security Group tab. Note the security groups attached to it.
  2. In one of them, add an inbound rule for port 1167 with Any Network as the source. In the port list, choose CDP Backup, the entry for port 1167. See Security Group.
  3. If the node runs a firewall of its own, such as UFW, firewalld, or Windows Defender Firewall, allow inbound TCP port 1167 there as well. See Allow port 1167 in the node’s firewall.

A rule that allows All or All TCP traffic works too. In a Custom TCP rule, 1167 can be one of several ports. A port range such as 1000-2000 does not count, even if it includes 1167.

For every setting in the dialog, see Turn on CDP Backup for a node.

If the node holds sensitive data, read Backup encryption before you turn backup on. You choose encryption only at this point. Turning backup off deletes every recovery point the node has. To add encryption later, you must turn backup off and on again.

  1. In MyAccount, open CDP Backups. If none of your nodes is backed up yet, click Get Started. Manage CDP Backups lists your nodes.
  2. Open the node’s Actions menu and click Activate Backup. Backup Schedule Configuration opens.
  3. Leave the plan that is selected in Select backup schedule mode. The dialog shows how often that plan backs up and which recovery points it keeps. You can change the plan later. If you change the plan later, the yearly count stays as this plan sets it now.
  4. Leave the other settings as they are for now, and click Activate.

You see “Your backups will begin shortly.”, and E2E emails the account owner that backup is activated. The first backup starts right away. Because it copies all the node’s data, it takes longer than the backups after it.

In Manage CDP Backups, the node’s Backup Status reads In-Progress while the first backup runs. Click Refresh to see its latest status. When it reads Available, the first recovery point is ready. E2E emails the account owner, with project members in copy. On a new, nearly empty node, the first backup takes about five minutes.

  1. In Manage CDP Backups, click the node, and open its Backup Recovery Points tab.
  2. Click the date of the recovery point. If the backup is encrypted, enter the Passphrase and click Submit. Browse Recovery Point opens at /, the top of the node’s disk.
  3. Open a folder to see the files the backup holds.

This is where you come back to restore a file. Close Browse Recovery Point for now.

The node is backed up on its plan’s schedule, and each backup adds a recovery point you can restore from. Next:
