Increase the workspace size

View as Markdown

The workspace is the instance’s own disk, mounted at /home/jovyan, and the place where files survive stops, starts, and restarts. When it fills up and writing under /home/jovyan fails with no space left on device, or before a large download, make it bigger on the instance’s Workspace Size tab. The instance can keep running while you do.

  • An instance in any status except Saving Image. The Workspace Size tab is hidden while the instance is Pending or Expired.
  • Permission to update instances in the project. Every project role except MEMBER has it, and a MEMBER needs a policy that allows updates.

Choose the size with care. A workspace can only grow: once you increase it, it keeps the new size for as long as the instance exists. The first 30 GB of every workspace are free. Each GB above 30 GB has a monthly price, charged for the hours the workspace exists. That includes the hours the instance is stopped, until you delete it. The larger size is billed from the moment you resize. See pricing.

The workspace can be up to your account’s limit in the instance’s region, which is 15,000 GB unless E2E has set a different limit for your account.

  1. In Manage Instances, select the instance’s name, then open the Workspace Size tab.
  2. Set a new size, larger than the current one and at most your limit, with the slider in steps of 10 GB or by typing any whole number of GB.
  3. Select Update. On a Running instance, confirm in Resize Workspace. On an instance in any other status, TIR updates the size straight away.

The new size can take a few minutes to take effect.

While the instance is Running, open its Monitoring tab. Workspace Usage shows how much of the workspace is used and its total size. When the total matches your new size, the extra space is ready to use in /home/jovyan.

When the workspace reaches your account’s limit, the Workspace Size tab offers Request. Select it to ask E2E to review a larger limit.

Keep large files in the workspace or mounted storage

Section titled “Keep large files in the workspace or mounted storage”

A bigger workspace helps only with files you write in /home/jovyan. Files written outside /home/jovyan and your mounts fill the plan’s ephemeral storage instead, which is cleared on every restart. When it is full, the instance restarts and loses those files. Put large data in /home/jovyan, on a dataset, or on a file system you mount. See Where your files live and Mount datasets and file systems.

You can also choose a larger workspace from the start when you create an instance. If the instance reports that its disk is full, or the new size does not show, see Troubleshooting TIR Instances.
