When a TIR Virtual Machine (VM) fails to launch, it stays in your list with the reason, so you can retry it in one step instead of filling in the form again. Retry launch removes the failed attempt and builds the VM again from its settings.
Before you begin
Section titled “Before you begin”You need a VM whose launch failed, marked Error in Manage VMs.
Give a launch that is still running time to finish, even when it is taking longer than usual.
Read why the launch failed
Section titled “Read why the launch failed”In Manage VMs, select the VM’s name. Its page gives the reason for the failure and one of two hints:
- “This looks like a temporary fault”, which adds that retrying usually clears it. A retry is the right next step.
- “This failure will repeat on a retry. Change the configuration and launch again, or contact support with the VM ID.” Skip the retry and go to Launch it again with other settings.
When you launched several VMs at once, each one that failed shows Error on its own, and you retry each one separately. The others run as usual.
Retry the launch
Section titled “Retry the launch”On the VM’s page, select Retry launch. The retry starts at once, with no confirmation, and the VM goes through its launch again. When it is ready, it turns Running. Billing starts only when the VM is running, so the time it spends launching is free. To sign in, see Connect to a VM over SSH.
Launch it again with other settings
Section titled “Launch it again with other settings”If the hint says the failure will repeat, or a retry fails too, delete the VM and create it again with other settings, such as another plan or image.
- On the VM’s page, select Delete VM, and confirm. See Delete a VM.
- Create the VM again with the new settings. See Create a VM.
If the new launch fails as well, create a support
ticket with the VM name, the project, the time,
the reason shown, and the VM ID. The ID is in the browser’s address bar on the VM’s page, after
/vm/. For the other messages a launch can show, see Troubleshooting TIR Virtual
Machines.
