Get started with Saved Images

Save a node as an image, find it on the Saved Images page, and launch a new node from it. When you are done, you will have a reusable template and a second node built from it, ready to go the same way.

You need a node to save. Any node can be saved as an image except a firewall or spot node.

Open the node’s Actions menu and click Save Image. If your series needs the node powered off first, power it off when asked; otherwise the save starts right away.

Name the image using only letters, digits, underscores, and hyphens, 50 characters or fewer. Click Save Image to start.

The image is a copy of the node’s root disk, so it carries the operating system, applications, and configuration you set up. To reuse data stored on an attached volume, reattach that volume on each node you launch. You are charged for the storage the image uses once it is ready.

The save takes a few moments, and the node stays busy until it finishes.

Once the save finishes, open Storage > Saved Images in MyAccount. Your new image is in the list, showing Ready (or Available) in the State column; that means it is ready to use.

You can search for it by name or filter the list by a tag, and you will see how many nodes and scale groups run from it.

From the image’s Actions menu, click Create Node. The create-node flow opens with your saved image as the base.

Choose a plan in the same region, with the same operating system, version, and category as the image, and with root disk at least as big as the image. The rest of the create-node flow works like any node. Review the summary and launch.

Your new node starts from the saved image, already set up the same way as the node you saved it from, with no repeat configuration.

If the image will not launch a node, or stays in Creating, see Troubleshooting Saved Images.
