Save a node as an image

View as Markdown

Saving a node as an image freezes its root disk into a reusable template. Launch new nodes from that template later, already set up the same way. Any node can do this except a firewall or spot node.

C3, M3, SDC3, GDC3, E1, and E1WC nodes can save an image while the node is Running. Every other family, including GDC, needs the node Powered off first. Save Image is not available for a node still on the older Xen hypervisor. Each family code is explained in Node families.

If the node has an MS-SQL license installed, its Actions menu shows a message asking you to contact cloud-platform@e2enetworks.com instead of Save Image.

Open the node’s Actions menu and click Save Image. Name the image using only letters, digits, underscores, and hyphens, 50 characters or fewer. Saving fails if that name is already used by another image, or if the node’s own plan is no longer offered. Confirm to start.

Save Image images the node’s root disk only. Anything on attached volumes is left out, and you are charged for the storage the saved image itself uses.

The node’s other actions return when the image is saved. The image then appears on the Saved Images page, and its state reads Ready. To run an encrypted node from it, turn on encryption when you create that node.

Launch a new node from the saved image on any plan in the same region with the same OS, version, and category. Its root disk needs to be at least as big as the image. See Saved Images to manage, export, or import it from there. Exporting needs a source node that was not encrypted. A Currently no plan available message on an image means its series does not support that plan; the image is fine and is not still syncing.

To keep a copy outside E2E or move the image to the other region, see Export an image to Object Storage. If Save Image is missing or the save fails, see Troubleshooting image import and export.
