Upgrade a node's plan

View as Markdown

Upgrading a node’s plan gives it more vCPU and RAM, and a bigger disk when the new plan has one. Your files and settings stay where they are. E1-series nodes are different: their plan change leaves the disk alone, and you grow it with Increase root storage.

  • The node must be Powered off. See Power off and start a node.
  • Delete any snapshot on the node first; a plan change starts only when it has none.
  • On a prepaid account, make sure your balance covers at least a day at the new plan, or the prorated committed charge.
  • Plan changes are available for Linux nodes in the C3, M3, SDC3, and E1 families; see Node families for what each family is.

Open the node’s Actions menu and click Upgrade Node Plan (Update Node Plan for E1-series nodes). The list shows only plans with a disk at least as large as your current one, so your disk only grows. Pick the plan you want; the screen shows the price change before you confirm. When the new plan has a bigger disk, the node grows to that size during the change. Everything already on it stays where it is.

Only the same plan or a bigger one is offered later, so pick carefully. If the node is on committed pricing, the upgrade applies now. You move to the bigger plan, and the leftover balance you have already paid is prorated toward it.

Start the node again; see Power off and start a node. To confirm from inside a Linux node, run nproc for the vCPU count and free -h for the memory.

If Upgrade Node Plan is greyed out, the reasons are in Troubleshooting node actions and lifecycle.
