Convert a node to committed billing

View as Markdown

Most node plans bill hourly; many families also offer a discounted committed plan for a set term. Converting an existing node locks in that rate from your own moment of choosing, rather than only at launch. For what committed billing saves and the term you are committing to, see Committed nodes.

Convert to Committed, in the node’s Actions menu, needs a plan that offers committed pricing. It is offered on hourly nodes, except spot nodes and nodes on Private Cloud. If it does not appear where you expect it, that family or plan does not offer committed billing yet; contact sales to request it.

Click Convert to Committed and confirm. The full committed-period cost is deducted from your infra credits, the prepaid balance on your account that charges are deducted from, right away, or billed in full if you are on postpaid. Converting takes a few minutes, and you get an email once it is done. Auto-renewal is turned on by default; change it afterward from Committed Settings.

Once a node is committed, its Committed Settings show the percentage you are saving and when the commitment ends. From there you choose one of:

  • Auto-renewal: start a new committed term automatically when this one ends. The node keeps its committed rate without you coming back to convert it again. This is already turned on when you convert, so it is the setting in place unless you change it.
  • Switch to hourly billing at the base rate once the commitment ends. Choose this if you want to keep the node running past the term without committing to another one right away.
  • Auto-terminate: delete the node when the commitment ends. Choose this if you already know you will not need it past this term.

Auto-termination is offered only here, from Committed Settings after converting.

Auto-termination is not available on a committed database node, which can auto-renew or switch to hourly billing. Auto-termination deletes the node and all its backups, with no choice to keep them. Save an image first if you want to keep anything. See Delete a node for the interactive delete flow, which does let you choose what to keep.

You can delete a committed node before its committed-until date. You have already paid for the term, and that stays as is either way; see Delete a node for the delete step itself.

To confirm the conversion, wait for the email, then open the node’s Committed Settings: it shows what you are saving and the date the term ends. If Convert to Committed or Committed Settings is greyed out, see Troubleshooting node actions and lifecycle.
