Reserve IP FAQ

View as Markdown

Your account can hold five reserved IPs in each region by default, counted across all its projects. When you reach the limit, the reserve dialog offers Request, and E2E reviews your request. See Reserve an IP.

Am I charged for a reserved IP that nothing uses?

Section titled “Am I charged for a reserved IP that nothing uses?”

Yes. A reserved IP is charged monthly from the moment you reserve it until you delete it. See Reserved IP billing.

Can I move a reserved IP to another project?

Section titled “Can I move a reserved IP to another project?”

Yes, to another project in your account, if you are an Owner or Admin and the IP is Available. See Transfer a reserved IP.

Which resources can a reserved IP attach to?

Section titled “Which resources can a reserved IP attach to?”

A public IP attaches to an instance, a VM, a Slurm cluster, or a Kubernetes cluster in the same project and region. A VPC IP attaches to an instance or an inference service. See Attach a reserved IP.

Does detaching a reserved IP stop its charge?

Section titled “Does detaching a reserved IP stop its charge?”

No. A public reserved IP is charged until you delete it, whatever its state, and a transfer to another project keeps the charge running too. Deleting an instance leaves its reserved IPs in place, still charged. See Reserved IP billing.

No. Reserving, attaching, detaching, and deleting a VPC IP are free in TIR. The MyAccount VPC it comes from is billed on its own plan.

Does my instance keep its address when it stops?

Section titled “Does my instance keep its address when it stops?”

With a reserved IP, yes: the address stays yours through every stop and start. The default public IP of an instance stays through a restart, but a stop gives it back, so the next start can bring a different address. See Reserved IPs.

Why did reserving a VPC IP use two addresses from my VPC?

Section titled “Why did reserving a VPC IP use two addresses from my VPC?”

A VPC IP takes the IP itself and an Egress IP from the VPC. The list shows both.

Can I transfer a VPC IP to another project?

Section titled “Can I transfer a VPC IP to another project?”

No. Only a public reserved IP transfers. For a VPC IP, delete it and reserve a new one in the other project.

Can I attach more than one reserved IP to an instance?

Section titled “Can I attach more than one reserved IP to an instance?”

Yes. One instance can hold several reserved IPs. See Attach a reserved IP.

I created a VPC but cannot reserve an IP in it. Why?

Section titled “I created a VPC but cannot reserve an IP in it. Why?”

A VPC IP comes from a VPC in your E2E MyAccount project. A VPC you create under Networking > VPC is for a virtual machine on a CPU plan, so the list of VPCs for a VPC IP leaves it out. See VPCs and Reserved IPs.
