Detach a reserved IP

View as Markdown

Detach a reserved IP to free it from the resource that uses it. The IP stays reserved for you, so you can attach it to a different resource. Detaching a VPC IP also ends the resource’s network connection to the VPC.

You need a reserved IP with Status Attached and Update permission on the resource it is attached to.

A public IP is still charged monthly after you detach it. To stop the charge, delete the IP. Before you detach the only IP of an instance that has SSH turned on, attach another reserved IP or a VPC IP.

You can detach a VPC IP once its connection reads Connected or Connection Failed. While it is Connecting, TIR refuses to detach it. Detach a VPC IP before you delete it or attach it to another resource.

  1. In TIR, open your project. In the side menu, under PLATFORM SERVICES, select Networking, then Reserve IP.
  2. In the row of the IP, open the Action menu and select Detach Reserve IP. This choice is available while the IP is Attached.
  3. In Detach IP, tick “Are you sure you want to proceed?”.
  4. Select Detach.

In the list, Assigned To is empty and Status is Available.

The IP is free for its next use. Attach it again, transfer it to another project, or delete it to stop paying for it.

  1. In TIR, open your project. In the side menu, under PLATFORM SERVICES, select Networking, then Reserve IP.
  2. In the row of the VPC IP, open the Action menu and select Detach VPC.
  3. The dialog warns that the resource will lose its network connection to the VPC. Tick “Are you sure you want to proceed?”.
  4. Select Detach VPC.

Open the instance, open its Network tab, select Detach VPC, and confirm. This is the recommended way for an instance. See Manage IP addresses on an instance.

The VPC IP shows Status Available and an empty Assigned To. You can now attach it again or delete it.
