E2E Object Storage FAQ

3 to 63 characters, lowercase letters, numbers, and hyphens, starting and ending with a letter or number, not formatted like an IP address (for example, 203.0.113.1), unique across every E2E account, and fixed once the bucket is created. See Create a bucket for the full create flow.

What is the biggest file I can upload through the MyAccount dashboard?

Section titled “What is the biggest file I can upload through the MyAccount dashboard?”

The dashboard adds no limit of its own: like any S3-compatible service, a single object tops out at 5 TiB, uploaded in parts of 5 MiB to 5 GiB each, up to 10,000 parts. See Upload and download objects.

Is there a limit on how many buckets or objects I can have?

Section titled “Is there a limit on how many buckets or objects I can have?”

No. A project can have as many buckets as you need, and a bucket can hold any number of objects. You pay for the storage you use; see E2E’s pricing page. To create one, see Create a bucket.

Are there limits on what a single API list request returns?

Section titled “Are there limits on what a single API list request returns?”

Yes. A list request returns at most 1,000 objects, 1,000 parts, or 1,000 multipart uploads at a time, so reading back a large bucket means paging through it in chunks of 1,000. An object can be as small as 0 bytes. See Use the S3-compatible API.

Is E2E Object Storage the same thing as Amazon S3?

Section titled “Is E2E Object Storage the same thing as Amazon S3?”

No, it is E2E’s own service, and S3-compatible: it implements the same API, so S3 tools and SDKs work against it too. See S3 compatibility.

Can I use AWS’s own CLI or SDK tools against E2E Object Storage?

Section titled “Can I use AWS’s own CLI or SDK tools against E2E Object Storage?”

Yes, once you point them at E2E’s endpoint and an E2E access key instead of Amazon’s. Creating and listing buckets are the exceptions: those happen in the dashboard or through the MyAccount API; see S3 compatibility for details.

Section titled “How long can a shared download link for an object stay active?”

Anywhere from 1 second to 7 days; you set the exact duration when you generate it. See Share an object with a presigned URL.

Can I turn on Object Lock for a bucket I already created?

Section titled “Can I turn on Object Lock for a bucket I already created?”

No, Object Lock is a choice you make only when you create the bucket, and it stays fixed for the bucket’s life. See Object Lock.

Section titled “What is the difference between Governance Lock and Legal Hold on a bucket?”

Governance Lock sets a retention period that you, the bucket’s owner, can still shorten or clear before it expires. Legal Hold has no retention period or expiry at all: it stays on until you turn it off yourself, with no override. See Object Lock.

Can I create a new bucket using the API instead of the dashboard?

Section titled “Can I create a new bucket using the API instead of the dashboard?”

Yes, through the MyAccount API with your account API key. An access key in an S3-compatible CLI or SDK works on objects; buckets are created in the dashboard or through the MyAccount API. See Create a bucket.

Can I list all my buckets using the command line?

Section titled “Can I list all my buckets using the command line?”

No, an access key only reaches the objects inside a bucket it has been given a role on. List every bucket on your account from the dashboard or the MyAccount API instead. See S3 compatibility.

Is object storage something I can attach to my node like a disk?

Section titled “Is object storage something I can attach to my node like a disk?”

No, a bucket is a container you reach over the network, with an access key or a shared link, from anywhere. A Block Storage volume works differently: it attaches directly to a node, with a drive letter or a mount point. See the E2E Object Storage overview.

To make a node’s own boot disk bigger, see Increase a node’s root storage. To attach a separate disk you can resize independently, see Block Storage. To store files outside the node entirely, reached over the network, use E2E Object Storage; see Get started with E2E Object Storage.

Is data transfer out of E2E Object Storage billed separately?

Section titled “Is data transfer out of E2E Object Storage billed separately?”

Yes. Data that leaves E2E’s network for the public internet is charged per GB. See E2E’s pricing page for the current rate. Storage itself is billed by the bytes you keep, on a slab that resets each calendar month, and an empty bucket costs nothing.

What is the maximum transfer speed between a Node and Object Storage?

Section titled “What is the maximum transfer speed between a Node and Object Storage?”

Up to 40 Gbps. The actual speed you see depends on factors like whether the transfer stays between E2E Nodes and Object Storage or comes in from the internet, and on the node’s own plan and network path.
