Block Storage is billed on the size you allocate, whether or not you use it.

Storage Pricing​

  • Allocation: a fixed size you choose at creation, from a 10 GB minimum up to your project's storage limit.
  • Billing: the full allocated size, every month, regardless of consumption.
  • Flexibility: can be increased at any time; never reduced.
You pay for what you allocate

Allocate 100 GB and use 10 GB, and you are still billed for 100 GB. Deleting files frees space inside the disk but does not lower the bill.

Worked Examples​

A 20 GB scratch disk​

20 × ₹10 = ₹200 per month. The same data in Object Storage would cost the ₹625 flat slab rate, so the disk wins.

A 100 GB working set​

100 × ₹10 = ₹1,000 per month, against ₹625 for Object Storage. If the workload has to write into its mount directory, the disk is still the right choice; if it only reads, move it to Object Storage.

Growing from 50 GB to 300 GB​

The disk starts at ₹500 and reaches 300 × ₹10 = ₹3,000, with a manual resize at each step. The same growth in Object Storage runs from ₹625 to ₹750 and needs no action. For data that grows, Object Storage is both cheaper and less work.

Cost Optimization​

  • Size it honestly. You cannot shrink a disk, and you pay for every allocated GB. Start near what you need and grow it later.
  • Keep bulk data in Object Storage. Mount an Object Storage bucket read-only for the large reference data and keep the disk small for scratch.
  • Delete disks you have finished with. An idle disk is billed the same as a busy one.
  • Compress before writing. Less allocated space means a smaller bill.

Frequently Asked Questions​

What happens if I delete files from the disk?

Nothing changes on the bill. You are charged for the allocated size, not the used space. To pay less, create a smaller disk and migrate.

Can I reduce the disk size?

No. A disk can only be increased.

Can I switch an existing disk to Object Storage to save cost?

No. A disk cannot be converted into a bucket. Create an Object Storage bucket and copy the data across.

Is encryption free?

Yes. E2E Managed encryption is provided at no extra cost.

Am I charged for data transfer?

No separate transfer charge applies to Block Storage. Data moves through the workload the disk is mounted on.
