Troubleshooting & FAQ
Common Issues
| Issue | What to do |
|---|---|
| Disk not visible in an Instance or Virtual Machine | It was not attached when the workload launched. Attach it from the workload's storage options and restart. |
| "Already mounted on another resource" | A disk attaches to one workload at a time. Detach it from the workload holding it, or use Object Storage for data several workloads need at once. |
| Resize Disk tab is missing | Your role does not have the Update permission for Block Storage. |
| Update is disabled on the resize panel | The size you entered matches the current size. Pick a larger one. |
| Resize is rejected with a range message | The new size must be between the current size and your project's storage limit. |
| Already at the maximum size | Use the Request button on the resize panel to ask for a higher project limit. |
| Cannot reduce the disk size | Disks only grow. Create a smaller disk and migrate the data. |
| Disk is full | Free space inside the mount, or increase the size from the Resize Disk tab. |
| Delete is refused | The disk is attached to one or more AI Labs courses. Remove it from the courses first. |
| No Setup or Data Objects tab | Those belong to Object Storage. A disk has no S3 endpoint or object browser. |
| Stuck in Error status | Provisioning failed. Delete the disk and create it again; if it recurs, contact support. |
Security Overview
Authentication
- RBAC — project-level IAM controls who can read, create, update, or delete disks. Actions you lack permission for are hidden.
- There are no access keys for a disk. Access comes from being able to launch a workload with it mounted.
Data Security
- Encryption at rest — available with E2E Managed keys, set at creation. Not offered in every region.
- The disk is reachable only from the workload it is mounted on, not over the network.
Network Isolation
Disks are logically isolated within your project and have no public endpoint.
Frequently Asked Questions
General
What is the difference between Block Storage and Object Storage?
Block Storage is a disk of fixed size, mounted read-write, with low latency and high IOPS — best for scratch space and caching. Object Storage is an S3-compatible EOS bucket with no fixed size, mounted read-only, ideal for large training data, backups, and model artifacts.
Can I convert a disk to Object Storage?
No. Create an Object Storage bucket and copy the data across.
How do I access my disk from an Instance or Virtual Machine?
Select it when you launch the Instance or Virtual Machine, or attach it later from its Storage tab. It appears read-write under /datasets/<name>.
Can several workloads use the same disk at once?
No. A disk attaches to one workload at a time. For concurrent access, use Object Storage, SFS, or PFS.
Capacity
What is the minimum and maximum size?
The minimum is 10 GB and the default on the create form is 100 GB. The maximum is your project's storage limit, which the create and resize controls enforce.
How do I increase the size?
Open the disk's Resize Disk tab, set a larger value, and click Update.
Can I decrease it?
No. Increases are one-way.
What if I need more than my project limit allows?
The resize panel shows a Request button once you reach the limit. Submit the size you need and the E2E team reviews it.
Encryption and Security
Which encryption types are supported?
E2E Managed only. User-managed keys are offered for EOS buckets, not disks.
Can I enable encryption after creating the disk?
No. It is set at creation.
Is encryption free?
Yes.
Data Management
How do I get data in and out?
Through the workload the disk is mounted on — copy files in from a terminal on the Instance or Virtual Machine, or write to the mount from your code. There is no portal uploader or S3 endpoint for a disk.
How do I delete data?
Delete files from the mounted directory as you would on any filesystem. This frees space inside the disk but does not change the bill, which is based on the allocated size.
What happens to my data if I delete the disk?
The disk and everything on it are destroyed permanently. Copy anything you need into Object Storage first.
Can I share a disk with other project members?
Yes — it is visible to all members of the project, and any of them can mount it on a workload. Only one workload can hold it at a time.
