Quick Start Guide

Create a Block Storage disk, then mount it read-write on an Instance (container) or Virtual Machine.

Prerequisites

  • TIR project: access to a TIR project where your role can create Block Storage.

Create a Disk

  1. Open the service. In the TIR sidebar, go to Storage > Block Storage.

  2. Start the form. Click CREATE BLOCK STORAGE. On an empty project, use the create link on the landing page instead.

  3. Fill in the fields:

    FieldNotes
NameThe name workloads mount the disk by. Maximum 50 characters.
Enable EncryptionTurns on encryption at rest. Not offered in every region.
Encryption TypeE2E Managed is the only option for disks. Shown once encryption is on.
Disk SizeSize in GB, set with the slider or the number field. The minimum is 10 GB and the default is 100 GB; the ceiling is your project's storage limit.
  4. Check the cost. The form shows the per-GB rate and the total chargeable per month for the size you picked.

  5. Create. Click CREATE. The disk appears in the listing and moves to Ready once it is provisioned.

Size is one-way

A disk can be increased later but never reduced. Since you are billed on the allocated size whether or not you use it, start close to what you actually need.

Mount It on an Instance or Virtual Machine

When you launch an Instance (container) or a Virtual Machine, select the disk under the storage options, or attach it later from its Storage tab. It mounts read-write at /datasets/<name>.

One workload at a time

A disk attaches to one resource at a time. If it is already mounted elsewhere, the portal marks it as already mounted. Unmount it there first, or use Object Storage for data that several workloads read at once.

Grow the Disk Later

Select the disk, open the Resize Disk tab, set a larger size, and click Update.
