Create a tag

View as Markdown

A tag is a short label you create, such as production or team-alpha, so you can group and find resources by what they are for. You create it once in a project, then attach it to any resource there that offers tags.

Switch to the project you want the tag in. A tag belongs to one project, and Tags Management shows only the tags of the project you are in. To switch, pick the project from the list in the header; see Create a project.

In the sidebar, open Settings, then Tags. The Tags Management page lists the project’s tags, with Tag name and Description columns, and Actions for anyone with permission to update or delete a tag. Search Tags filters the list by name. The list shows ten tags at a time.

  1. Click Create new Tag.
  2. In Tag Name, enter a name. It is required, up to 30 characters, and must be different from every other tag name in the project. MyAccount refuses a name of only spaces.
  3. (Optional) In Description, enter up to 256 characters. A description can repeat another tag’s description.
  4. Click Create.

MyAccount confirms that the tag was created, naming it in the message, and the tag appears in the list.

If the name breaks a rule, MyAccount says which one:

  • Only spaces is not allowed: the name has only spaces. Enter a name with other characters.
  • Tag Name is required.: the name is empty. Enter a name.
  • Label name must be unique!: another tag in the project already has this name. Choose a different one.

Creating a tag does not attach it to any resource. To put it on a node, a volume, or another resource, attach it from that resource’s own list page; see Tag a resource.

  1. On the tag’s row, click the three dots, then Edit. The same form opens, with Update in place of Create.
  2. Change the name, the description, or both.
  3. Click Update.

MyAccount confirms that the tag’s details were updated.

  1. On the tag’s row, click the three dots, then Delete.
  2. MyAccount asks you to confirm, naming the tag. Confirm the delete.

MyAccount confirms that the tag was deleted, naming it in the message. Deleting a tag removes it from every resource that carried it, and the resources themselves stay as they are.
