Manage Backups

Introduction

Backups can help you manage a server’s backup policy by saving files and folders of your Virtual Compute E2E Node and rolling back to a previous backup. The Backups performed on ‘MyAccount’ are incremental backups, which means that only those blocks that are changed till your most recent backup are saved.

How does Backup work?

Backups are great means to protect the contents of your Virtual Compute Node. They are helpful in projects or milestones to back up the complete data or a set of files containing important information. E2E Networks Backups works as an exact replica of your file system which is backed up automatically at periodic intervals. Each backup created contains all the data which was backed up to restore from the provisioning till the most recent block update. This allows point-in-time to restore from any of the recovery points present in the archive.

Note: By default, the folders on /var/log/ are not backed up to conserve space. Backing up this folder increases the cost of the backup for you since the incremental updates are high and are hence excluded. In case, you require this folder to be backed up, please raise a request to the team at cloud-platform@e2enetworks.com

Activate Backup

  • Logging into E2E Networks MyAccount Portal

  • Navigate to Backup page either from dashboard or from Side menu

  • The number of E2E Nodes currently created by you will be listed on the ‘Manage Backups’ page

  • If you have enabled the Backups for your E2E Node while creation then ‘Activate’ status of Backup will be shown else it will be “deactivated”.

  • You have to click on the toggle switch to activate the Backups for your E2E Node.

  • Activate Backup pop-up window will appear on the screen. Here, you have to choose the Backup schedule frequency.

  • If MySQL server running on this E2E Node, then you may provide the Admin credentials of MySQL server for activating backup of it

Once your backup is activated, You will receive a notification Email and this will have all the details once your E2E Node backup starts.

Note

The Backups are not available for E2E Nodes using ‘CentOS-8’ or ‘Opensuse’ operating system.

Manage Backup

The ‘Activate’ status of Backup will be shown after the first backup taken for the respective E2E Node. Now, when you click on the ‘+’ icon then following describes the fields and options available in this panel

Usage

The ‘Usage’ report provides information about the Backup status, Backup size, and Last Available Backup for the respective E2E Node.

Recovery Points to Restore

The ‘Available Recovery Points to Restore’ section provides information for each backup taken for your E2E Node, in chronological order. You can select the backup Points to Restore file system or selected files.

Task History

The ‘Task History’ has information of backups status with respect to scheduled run and completion along with date & time stamp, for your E2E Node.

MySQL Credentials

In the ‘MySQL Credentials’ section, you can configure the MySQL server backups by Adding/updating your MySQL Admin credentials.

Schedule

The ‘Schedule’ section will provide the consolidated information for ‘Local Retention Points’ ‘Current Frequency’ and ‘Next Run Time’ related to the Backups of the respective E2E Node. Also, you can change the Backup schedule frequency.

Restore Backups

The ‘Restore backups’ feature provides you a facility to restore the entire file system or selected files and folders into your E2E Node from any available Backup Recovery Point.

  • Go to the ‘Available Recovery Point to Restore’ section and select the backup recovery point.

  • Now, you have to click on the Search icon to browse the file system.

Browse Recovery Point pop up window will appear on the screen.

  • Select the required files/folders.

  • After selecting the files/folder you have to accept the disclaimer and then click the Restore button.

Note

Before proceeding with the backup process kindly ensure that there is enough free disk space available to restore the selected files/folders. If there is not enough free disk space for restoration, your services or the E2E Node itself may face downtime.

  • An Information message will appear when the restoration process initiated.

  • The restoration process will take a few minutes for completion. It will depend on the size of files/folders you have selected for restoration.

  • Once, Backup Restoration completed successfully for your E2E Node, you will be notified via email and the selected files/folders will be available in your E2E Node.

Deactivate Backups

To deactivate backups of your E2E Networks E2E Node, you can follow these steps

  • To deactivate the backups, You have to click on the toggle switch to disable the Backups of the E2E node for which you want to stop the backups.

  • A confirmation popup will appear, click on the ‘Deactivate’ button to stop your E2E Node backups.
